About the Book
This collection of essays attempts for the first time to provide a composite
view of western Canadian development since the Second World War, and an
analysis of the dynamic decades following the Leduc discovery of 1947.
The book presents comprehensive essays on western history, political economy
and society by prominent social scientists and historians, and papers
which consider, through dialogue and discussion, the nature and direction
of change and modernization from a wide variety of disciplines. The
Making of the Modern West combines perspectives on both past development
and insights into contemporary society, thought and attitudes.
