About the Book

Author of over sixty plays, several short stories and a novel, the American-born Gwen Pharis Ringwood has since the 1930s been a steady and significant voice in the development of drama in Canada. Set for the most part in Alberta and British Columbia, where see lived almost all her life, her plays dramatize, in moods ranging from the sentimental to the satirical, the plight of individuals caught up in hardships brought on by economic, social, or racial factors, or in some of her strongest plays like Still Stands the House, by a combination of physical deprivation and psychological perversity. Best known for her full-length stage dramas, she was also attracted to radio and television plays, musicals, and children's drama, and served in various capacities in theatrical programs and institutions, both in Canada and inthe United States. Introduced with a biocritical essay by one of Canada's leading Ringwood scholars, Sister Geraldine Anthony, The Ringwood Papers offer a detailed record of the artistic development of this important dramatist.
