About the Book

This fascinating and lavishly illustrated history of Alberta's oldest professional artists' society documents and celebrates the development of the province's strong and vibrant artistic community. It honours the work of great Alberta artists of the past and gives an insight into today's established and emerging talents. There are anecdotes and brief biographical sketches of some of the province's most prominent artists, such as A.C. Leighton, Maxwell Bates, H.G. Glyde, Marion Nicoll, Illingworth Kerr, Stan Perrott, and Janet Mitchell.

No comprehensive account of the Society's rich history has existed until now. In addition, many of the paintings reproduced here are from private collections. According to historian Max Foran, this chronicle "adds significantly to the existing historiography of art in Alberta." Cathy Mastin, Senior Curator of Art, Glenbow Museum, notes that "the book documents some important moments in Alberta's visual arts history, makes a significant contribution to the study of art societies in Canada, [and] offers new information on the Alberta Society of Artists that is not available in other publications on Alberta art."
