About the Book As I Remember Them
recaptures life in rural Quebec in the first quarter of the twentieth
century through the personal account of the daughter of a Roman Catholic
priest. Originally written in the early 1970s, this book is based on Jeanne-Elise
Olsen's extraordinary recall of her youth spent in what was then an isolated
part of the Laurentians. It is at once autobiography, social anatomy,
family history, and apologia. As the daughter of a priest who married
a woman in his parish and was then excommunicated from the Church, Jeanne-Elise
Olsen recounts how an arrangement was made with the Church. It lifted
the ban, but only on specific conditions, one of which was for the couple
to leave Quebec. The family moved to Ditton Park in east-central Saskatchewan
and became engaged in agricultural and related pursuits. From this base,
the author provides rich insights into life on the prairies from the 1920s
on. As a primary source for social historians, this memoir eloquently
tells a personal story that reveals strength of character, family bonds,
religious devotion, and childhood memories that are truly reflective of
life in Quebec and the Canadian West.
