About the Book

Creating Citizens: History and Identity in Alberta’s Schools, 1905–1980 examines how Albertans have interpreted themselves and their world through history and social studies curricula and texts from 1905 to 1980. Author Amy von Heyking shows that these courses, more than others, addressed issues of identity by creating the country and regionís past. These ideas that were taught to scores of young students were designed to prepare them for a meaningful citizenship.
By tracing the evolution of this curriculum over the course of seventy-five years, von Heyking gives the reader a unique opportunity to analyze the images of the nation, the region and of ëothersí as they were taught to generations of Alberta school children.
