About the Book Creating Citizens: History and Identity in Alberta’s Schools, 1905–1980
examines how Albertans have interpreted themselves and their world through history and social studies curricula and
texts from 1905 to 1980. Author Amy von Heyking shows that these courses, more than others, addressed issues of
identity by creating the country and regionís past. These ideas that were taught to scores of young students were
designed to prepare them for a meaningful citizenship.
About the Author Amy J. von Heyking is an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Elementary Education, University of Alberta. She has published journal articles on the history
of school curriculum, and has authored a number of history and social studies teaching resources.
