About the Book

Since the frequent references to works of art, artists, films, actors, composers, operas, plays, philosophers, philosophical systems - even to political events and ideologies - in the novels of Manuel Puig create a revealing auxiliary network of correlatives, it is surprising that they should have been largely ignored by his critics. Although selective emphasis has been placed on the use of popular culture, scant attention has been paid to references to so-called highbrow culture or to other "serious" topics. It is the aim of Pamela Bacarisse to draw attention to "the aware and knowing" craftsmanship of Puig's nine novels which has never received critical recognition. She shows how cultural references underpin the Argentinean author's favourite themes and often serve to highlight his attitudes and the direction of the texts.
