About the Book
This book is for the traveller/reader who wants to learn more about Portugal
in its historical context. Use it as a field manual to see all you can
of the ancient heritage and as a handy reference if you cannot visit the
sites but wish to know more of what Portugal has to offer than can be
found in other travel books.
This unique archaeological and historical guidebook introduces the reader
and the traveller to the foundations of the modern state from the earliest
period down to mediaeval times and includes maps and photos. Historical
sites are identified, described and located in relation to their historical
period and guides are provided to their in situ remains. Travel with the
authors to visit Paleolithic rupestrian paintings, ancient Neolithic,
Chalcolithic and Bronze Age fortified villages, tombs (dolmens, tholos,
cists), Celtic (Iron Age) settlements or castros, Roman towns, villas
and necropoli, Paleo-Christian churches and cemeteries, and Moslem castles.
