coulee, is a landscape dance video resulting from a multimedia, interdisciplinary, creative undertaking in the Fine Arts and Humanities Faculties at the University of Calgary.
The video project was initiated and completed in summer 2000, driven by the choreographic and landscape design interests of Davida Monk, the visual design aesthetic of Arthur Nishimura and the writings of Pamela Banting. The production was completed with the participation of the Advanced Media for Learning Group at the University of Calgary.
This program is the product of an innovative course, Landscape, Language and Dance, taught by Davida Monk, which situated the study of dance improvisation in the context of the natural prairie environment. The direction of the course was influenced by literature that examined the prairie biome and the human relationship with landscape. The collaborators share a deep and long-standing commitment to landscape based art, which is reflected in the stark yet winsome beauty of the images created in this program.
