Punctuating the Prairie's open plains like giant exclamation marks, the grain elevators on the Canadian Prairies have come to symbolize a way of life that is fast disappearing. Examining both the social framework that gave rise to grain elevators, as well as their structural principles and evolution, this program offers an in-depth analysis of their development in Canada. In addition to the primary elevators on the Prairies, terminal elevators in Canada's port cities are also considered. Archival footage from a variety of sources rounds out the program. From the great port-side monoliths to their smaller prairie cousins, this is the story of the grain elevator, eloquent testimonial of the relationship between built form and social purpose.
